MACHUPICCHU: INCA CITADEL

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is located in the district of Machupicchu, province of Urubamba, Cusco region, is one of the New Wonders of the modern world since 2007, and one of the best ecological destinations within the continent.

It was discovered in 1911 by the North American expedition led by Hiram Bingham, it would have been one of the monumental works of the Inca Pachacutec period. Machu Picchu occupies a total construction area of ​​530 m. long by 200 m. wide, and in its complex 172 smaller spaces are housed. In the Sanctuary there are two sectors or areas, the first is oriented towards agrarian purposes, and the other is urban. In the Agricultural Sector of Machu Picchu, there are terraces, tambos, gutters and areas for cultivation, there are constructions as small houses, possibly for the farmers sector. In the urban area of ​​the Sanctuary, which is the sacred area, there are housing areas and places for religious worship of the Incas, as well as for ceremonies of a civil nature. From this area stand out: The Temple of the Three Windows, the “Main Temple”, the Temple of the Sun, whose entrance door is marked by a double jamb entrance and the Temple of the Condor, in this temple caves are appreciated that had ends rituals You can also visit “Casa del Prcerdote”, a two-story building connected to the Temple of the Sun and where the utensils used for your ceremony are kept.

The other important space is the Sacred Plaza, a group of structures around a quadrangular courtyard. Other important sites are: The Royal Tomb, located under the Temple of the Sun, and where it is believed that it was buried a mummy of an Inca of the Empire, and, the Street of the Fountains, where circulating water used for ritual purposes.

Because it is a National Historic Sanctuary, a series of flora and fauna species are also protected in Machu Picchu. In the flora, the place houses more than 200 species of orchids. About the fauna, 300 species of birds stand out, animals like the dwarf deer, the cock of the rocks and the spectacled bear.


HUAYNAPICCHU MOUNTAIN

THERMAL BATHS OF AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN
